Latvian Minister of Education and Science visits LIOS

22.09.2025

On Friday, September 19, the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (LIOS) had the honor of welcoming Latvia’s Minister of Education and Science, Dace Melbārde.

During the visit, Professor Maija Dambrova, Head of the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Pharmacology and TARGETWISE Project Manager, introduced the Minister to LIOS’s key research directions in cardiovascular, neurological, and cancer studies, and outlined future plans under the TARGETWISE project.

As part of TARGETWISE, a new Metabolic Research Group (MRG) has been established to conduct research focused on identifying and validating novel molecular targets related to metabolic disorders. The group will apply advanced computational approaches and big data analytics to support the discovery of new therapeutic strategies. While the research team has only recently been formed, its planned activities represent an important step toward data-driven biomedical innovation in Latvia and beyond.

Minister Melbārde’s visit highlighted the importance of close cooperation between policymakers and the scientific community. Such engagement is vital for creating an environment where research, innovation, and public health advancement can thrive.

We sincerely thank Minister Dace Melbārde for her visit, interest, and support in strengthening the link between science and policy through initiatives like TARGETWISE.
